Kevote Factory is located within Makengi Location, Runyenjes sub county in Embu County. It is on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya about 150 km north of Nairobi city.

Embu County lies on south-eastern side of Mount Kenya. The county borders Tharaka Nithi to the North, Kitui to the east, Machakos to the south, Murang’a to the south west and Kirinyaga to the West. The administrative capital, Embu is also known as Kirimari, meaning top of the hill in Kiembu. The County was named after the main town Embu that was named after the main commuinity that lives in the area, the Aembu. Tea and coffee are the community’s main cash crops.

Kevote Factory is part of the Kirurumwe Farmers Cooperative Society. Kirurumwe FCS consists of Ngaindethia, Kianjuki and Kevote Factories. The coop has 18 permanent staff who are headed by a Secretary Manager.

Kevote factory was started in 1957 by a group of 100 farmers.

Kevote Factory has around 1000 members.

Altitude: The factory is situated at approximately 1,400-1,600 m.a.s.l

Soil Type: Deep red volcanic soils

Varieties: SL 28, SL34 constitute 85% while the rest is Ruiru 11 and a few have planted Batian. The new trend as well is grafted Ruiru 11 with SL variety.

Rainfall- Approx 1,200-1,400 mm per annum.

The rains are in two seasons, short and long rains. Late crop depends on short rains that come between October – December. Main crop receives adequate rain between March and June each year.
